The Younger Generation In the Twenty-first Century
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
We always say ‘we are the future’. Indeed. We, the younger generation represents modern knowledge, new concepts, ambition and great desire for success. But, have you ever thought of this question: how can we be successful in the 21st century, which is full of great challenges and fierce competitions? In my opinion, there are two important factors.
First, we have to catch the opportunities and face the challenges. China has successfully entered the World Trade Organization, Beijing has won the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games… If we want to be successful, we have to seize these opportunities. SARS and AIDS, environmental pollution, growing population… We have no choice but to solve these problems with our own hands. Thus, catching the opportunities and trying our best to cope with the difficulties is necessary for us to succeed in the 21st century.
Secondly, we have to learn to cooperate and compete. Last year, when SARS was spreading rapidly in China, scientists all over the world cooperated with each other and prevented the disease from spreading in a short period of time. At the same time, they were also competing against each other to see who could conquer the disease first. By cooperating and competing, the world develops day by day. Therefore, we, the younger generation, must know how to cooperate and compete.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are standing at the outset of a new century, we are at the gate of a new era. Looking back, the 20th century is a century of great developments and remarkable changes. Looking forward, the 21st century is a century full of opportunities, challenges, cooperation and competition. I believe, if we can seize the opportunities, face the challenges, cooperate and compete, success in the 21st century belongs to him, to you and to me.

The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words “thank you” and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain, half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. “I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for.” And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me.
I believe that we are not real social workers. We may be doing social work in the eyes of the people, but we are really contemplatives[修行者、沉思冥想的人] in the heart of the world. For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours…And I think that in our family we don’t need bombs and guns, to destroy, to bring peace, just get together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of each other in the home. And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.
And with this prize that I have received as a Prize of Peace, I am going to try to make the home for many people who have no home. Because I believe that love begins at home, and if we can create a home for the poor I think that more and more love will spread. And we will be able through this understanding love to bring peace be the good news to the poor. The poor in our own family first, in our country and in the world. To be able to do this, our Sisters, our lives have to be wove with prayer. They have to be woven with Christ to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because to be woven with Christ is to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because today there is so much suffering…When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, I have satisfied. I have removed that hunger. But a person who is shut out, who feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person who has been thrown out from society-that poverty is so full of hurt and so unbearable…And so let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, and once we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.

To park the bus, means to play very defensively, to get a lot of players behind the ball, to have no attacking play. Many people say that this phrase was first said by Jose Mourinho when he was Chelsea’s manager. He was describing a negative Tottenham team who played very defensively in a meeting between the two London clubs some years ago.
Imagine a bus parked in front of the goal. It is almost impossible to score, so people use “to park the bus” to mean one team was very negative, boring and defensive.
For example:
South Korea decided to proverbially ‘park the bus’ by bringing on its defensive stand-ins, who ultimately preserved its 2-0 lead.

Plants deserve respect, a group of Swiss experts said Monday, arguing that killing them arbitrarily was morally wrong — except when it comes to saving humans or maybe picking the petals off a daisy.
In a report on “the dignity of the creature in the plant world,” the federal Ethics Committee on non-human Gene Technology condemned the decapitation of flowers without reason, among other sins.
Still, commission member Bernard Baertsche suggested at a press conference the body weighed such cruel acts on a case-by-case basis, noting “the simple pleasure of picking the petals off a daisy might suffice as a reason.”
Similarly “all action that involves plants in the aim to conserve the human species is morally justified,” the commission, tasked to offer an ethical take on all areas of biotechnology and genetic engineering, said in its report.
Nor did the commission object to genetic engineering, since this did not threaten plants’ “autonomy — that is their capacity to reproduce or their capacity of adaptation.”
And only a minority of the group’s members objected to patenting plants, with the majority ruling the action did not infringe on “their moral value.”

Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping was at the Australian National University (ANU) Tuesday, donating books to the university’s new center on China education and research.
Xi congratulated on the establishment of the Australian Center on China in the World. He said the ANU has strong academic achievements on China study, which played a positive role in enhancing all-rounded understandings of China by all walks of life in Australia and promoting more cultural exchanges and cooperations between the two countries.
Xi said the Australian government’s decision in establishing such a center on China study and dedicating a huge amount of money for the research work has demonstrated Australia’s strong desire to learn more about China. He said he believes the new center will become a brand new platform at a higher level to promote communications and exchanges.
Xi said the Chinese government has carefully selected those books for the center to show support to the center. He hoped the books will be of use and convenience to the research work. China will actively encourage its academic institutions to have deeper exchanges with the center and enhance mutual understanding and exchanges of the academics and think tanks in the two countries, he said.
He also said that he hopes the new center will make active contribution in promoting bilateral ties and people-to-people understanding and friendship.
Later on Tuesday, Vice-President Xi also participated in a ceremony to formally open the Australia-China Joint Research Center for Functional Molecular Materials at ANU where he encouraged scientists in China and Australia to work closely together to address the global challenges in sustainable development.
ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said Vice-President Xi’ s participation today is the best way to recognize ANU’s focus on cooperation with China over the years. He said this is the biggest encouragement for the university to build the world’s first-class Australian Center on China in the World and the Joint Research Center for Functional Molecular Materials.
He added that the book gift given by the Chinese vice president will play an important role in better understanding China and promoting exchanges and friendly cooperation between Australia and China.

The international community has reacted positively to the pronounced move by the People’s Bank of China to proceed further with its reform of the exchange rate regime so as to enhance the flexibility of the renminbi’s or yuan’s exchange rate.
U.S. President Barack Obama described the move as a “constructive step” while IMF Director-General Dominique Strauss-Kahn rated the move as “a very welcomed development.”
“China’s decision to increase the flexibility of its exchange rate is a constructive step that can help safeguard the recovery and contribute to a more balanced global economy锛?quot; said Obama in a statement.
The IMF chief noted that China’s move “will help increase Chinese household income and provide the incentives necessary to re-orient investment toward industries that serve the Chinese consumer.”
The European Union said “such a move will be beneficial for both the Chinese economy and the global economy,” adding that the move would not only benefit China’s own economy but also the economy of the world as a whole.
“The implementation of the decision will help achieve more sustainable growth in the global economy, contribute to reduce external imbalances and strengthen the stability of the international monetary and financial system锛?quot; the 27-nation bloc said in a statement.
The statement even hailed the move as “providing an important contribution to the success of the G20 Toronto summit.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner also welcomed China’s decision to further reform its exchange rate mechanism and expected further cooperation with his Chinese counterpart within G20 to promote the economic recovery.
His views were shared by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “This is an important step forward and its full implementation will contribute to strong, sustainable and balanced global growth,” Harper said.
“We look forward to additional steps by G20 countries at the Toronto summit to improve the economic prospects of all of our citizens,” he added.
The People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, made the announcement ahead of the G20 summit which focuses on bettering international economic governance.

Australia outscored Turkey 69-52 in the final here on Monday to win the fifth men’s FIBA Stankovic Basketball Continental Cup.
The Aussie became the fifth titlists of the Cup, which was initiated in 2005 and held annually in China.
Defending champion Angola was beaten by China 58-50 in the contest for third place early Monday.
Australia controlled the game from the first period and once held a 56-36 lead before the end of the third quarter. Turkey could only manage to close it to 52-65 with two minutes left.
Three Aussies, who led 32-23 at halftime, scored double-figure with James Harvey 14 points. Turkoglu Umit and Sonkol Umit scored 11 each for Turkey, who was outrebounded 44-34 by Australia.
Early, 20-year-old Zhou Peng scored a game-high 20 points to lead China, the runner-up last year, over Angola, cliching the third place.
It was the worst result for China, who played without NBA star Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian.
Guard Zhang Qingpeng hit 14 point, Li Xiaoxu grabbed 11 rebounds for the hosts, who trounced Angola 89-62 on the first day of the Cup, but lost to Australia and Turkey in the preliminary competition.
Angola, using its second-string roster in Kunshan, was led by Miguel Kilal with 13 points and finished fourth, the last place at the current Cup.
